After Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy: slimming drug Orlistat

dossier

Orlistat is a weight loss medication designed to help treat obesity. It blocks the absorption of fats from the food you eat. This means that when you take orlistat with a meal that contains fat, some of the fat passes through your digestive system without being absorbed.

Orlistat works by inhibiting an enzyme called lipase, which is responsible for breaking down dietary fats. When lipase activity is blocked by orlistat, the undigested fats are not absorbed into your body and are instead excreted through the stool. This helps reduce calorie intake.

Research has shown that when orlistat is used as prescribed in addition to a reduced-calorie diet and increased exercise, it can help people lose more weight compared to people who just follow diet and exercise without the medication.

Brand names include Orlistat Sandoz, Orlistat Teva, Xenical and Alli. You usually take one capsule orally three times a day, with or just after a meal. If a meal is skipped or contains no fat, you may skip the dose. Always read the package leaflet before use.

Side effects of Orlistat

Although orlistat can be an effective weight loss drug, there are also possible side effects.

  • If fat leaves your body undigested, it results in oily stools and increased flatulence with possibly an oily discharge.
  • Orlistat may cause more frequent bowel movements and loose stools.
  • Some users experience abdominal pain, cramps or bloating.
  • Although less common, headaches have also been reported as a side effect.

If you experience serious side effects, such as severe abdominal pain, blood in the stool, or signs of liver problems (such as dark urine, yellowing skin), it is important to seek immediate medical attention.

Orlistat is considered safe when taken as directed. However, it is important to note that orlistat may interfere with the absorption of certain vitamins and nutrients, especially fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E and K. To ensure you get enough nutrients, your doctor may recommend that you take Orlistat to combine with a multivitamin supplement containing these vitamins.
