Orlen Group Announces Contractor for Offshore Wind Farms Installation Terminal in Świnoujście

The construction of the first offshore wind farms in each country requires very advanced preparations. Installation infrastructure is one of the key elements

Daniel Obajtek, president of Orlen

On Tuesday, the Orlen Group announced the selection of a contractor for the onshore part of the installation terminal for offshore wind farms in Świnoujście. The contractor for the investment will be Budimex, Orlen said in a statement.

Construction works will start in October and will be completed at the turn of 2024 and 2025, Orlen announced in a statement. Ultimately, the terminal will enable the installation of over 80 offshore wind turbines per year and will be able to handle the Baltic Power project and other planned wind investments, the company noted.

The land part of the installation terminal, for which Orlen Neptun is responsible, will be built in the port of Świnoujście, on an area of nearly 20 ha. Its role will be the reloading and storage of key components of offshore wind turbines, such as towers, blades and nacelles. The terminal will also be able to accept superstructures of marine transformer stations, weighing up to 24,000 tonnes. tone – Orlen emphasized.

The project will also include the construction of communication infrastructure and new workshop, administrative and office buildings. Ultimately, the terminal will serve approximately one hundred employees. The investment contractor is Budimex.

“The construction of the first offshore wind farms in each country requires comprehensive, very advanced preparations. Installation infrastructure is one of the key elements of this process. The terminal launched in the port of Świnoujście will be the first in Poland and one of the most modern structures of this type in Europe supporting offshore wind projects “The selection of the terminal contractor is another important point in the project schedule, which received a conditional investment decision in August,” said Orlen’s president, Daniel Obajtek, quoted in the company’s press release.

Orlen reminded that the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority is responsible for the construction of the hydrotechnical part of the investment, which will soon decide on the tender procedure for two new quays. At the same time, the waterway on the section from the Mielenska turntable to the new terminal will also be deepened.

The new quays will have technical parameters enabling the initial assembly of wind turbine towers over 100 m high and weighing approximately 1,000 m. tone each. The length of the quays, approximately 250 m in both cases, will enable the operation in Świnoujście of the largest currently available specialized jack-up vessels, intended for the installation of turbines with a power of 15 MW and larger, as well as over 200 m heavy lift vessels used to transport windmill components. – Orlen reported.

According to the assumptions, the terminal will first be used to install components of the Baltic Power offshore wind farm, the most advanced project in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea. Later, it will be used to implement further investments, the company noted.

Orlen recalled that the strategy until 2030 assumes that the company will have approximately 9 GW of renewable energy capacity in the next few years, including 5.8 GW in offshore. “We intend to carry out maritime investments both on the Oder Bank, near Kołobrzeg, and on the Słupsk Bank,” said Robert Nowicki, president of Orlen Neptun, quoted in the Orlen Group’s announcement.
