Orlando Fiordigiglio, historic boxer and champion originally from Torre del Greco, has announced his retirement from the ring due to an eye problem, although he assured that he will not abandon boxing. The news aroused admiration and esteem among his fans and in the community of Castiglion Fiorentino, where the mayor Mario Agnelli wanted to dedicate a heartfelt message to him.
“He may have hung up his gloves, but our Honorary Citizen Orlando Fiordigiglio will never cease to represent the essence of the clean sportsman, of the good man who made himself and who made himself loved by all sportsmen who followed and knew him, even those of our city. Thank you Dino”, declared Mayor Agnelli, recalling the honorary citizenship awarded to the boxer in 2019 as a symbol of the bond between Fiordigiglio and Castiglion Fiorentino.
Fiordigiglio grew up boxing in Arezzo, where he moved with his family as a young man. The boxer trained at Calamati Boxe, where under the guidance of masters Paolo Calamati and Aldo Sassoli he built a career full of successes. Italian Champion since 2013, European Union and WBC Champion, Fiordigiglio has been able to stand out not only for the titles won, but for his generous spirit and willingness to support others. In particular, the boxer has always participated in local initiatives in favor of the weakest, consolidating a relationship of affection with the Castiglione community.
“Orlando conquered everyone with his friendliness, his vitality and his captivating personality” – concluded Agnelli – A great sportsman and, above all, a great man who silently dedicates a large part of his life to people in difficulty ”.
Fiordigiglio’s career, which includes prestigious goals such as the Primo Carnera trophy and the IBF Intercontinental title, ends symbolically with a collective thanks. Even without gloves, he will continue to represent a point of reference, not only for the community that adopted him, but for the entire world of boxing and sport.
