As they gang up on the paparazzi in their Los Angeles neighborhood, Orlando Bloom and Prince Harry are almost one in the new animated series The Prince. The English actor indeed lends his voice to the Duke of Sussex in this satire of the adventures of the royal family, the first twelve episodes of which were unveiled on the HBO Max platform, Thursday, July 29. Directed by Gary Janetti, the show is inspired by his own Instagram account, on which he imagined, in a parodic way, Prince George’s reactions to celebrity news.
In addition to Meghan Markle’s husband, we find Queen Elizabeth II, played by Frances De La Tour, and her husband. Kate Middleton is voiced by Lucy Punch, Condola Rashad plays the role of the Duchess of Sussex and Prince William is played by Iwan Rheon. Dan Stevens lends his voice to the future king, Prince Charles, who is accompanied by his wife Camilla. As for Princess Charlotte, the protagonist’s sister, she is voiced by Sophie Turner.
Barely out and already targeted by critics
If the Windsor clan has not yet reacted to the broadcast of this new television work, some royal experts have not hesitated to express their anger. “What a strange world where Prince Harry and his neighbor from Montecito, Orlando Bloom, send each other messages to cry against intrusions (in their private life, Editor’s note) while the latter appears in a television series which makes fun of an eight-year-old child, Prince George ”, writes Richard Eden, columnist at Daily Mail, on his Twitter account.
Yet the English actor had said, in an interview for the Hollywood Reporter, to have, at first, refused to dub this series “because I am British and very proud of my roots. I know how much the royal family is adored by some and hated by others, and I have always taken this part of my heritage into account (…). I’m not normally someone who makes fun of other people, but this was done in such a smart, fine and loving way. ”. His fiancée, Katy Perry, who found the series “great”, also convinced him to change his mind.
Orlando Bloom also explains that he did not yet know Prince Harry when signing the contract. “I met him afterwards and he’s a very nice guy, with a great sense of humor. I hope he keeps it from the show, because they (the royal family, editor’s note) are on some sort of pedestal. We show them real worship, one way or another. ”
A capricious and arrogant little prince
But critics have already gone beyond this semi-conflictual relationship between the two neighbors. In The Prince, Gary Janetti portrayed Prince George as a temperamental and arrogant character, at only eight years old. Character traits that did not please supporters of the Windsor clan who expressed their anger on social networks, accusing the series of “harassment towards the future heir to the British throne”.
However, the producers of the show had taken care to warn viewers by posting a warning at the start of the program: “By royal decree, we order you to enjoy this series. Please remember that the characters and events depicted are completely fictional. Basically: it’s not really the royal family. It’s a parody, something like that. So, calm down. It’s an order.” Apparently, the message was not enough.
