Ex-young first British specialist in blockbusters, Orlando Boom is a vacuum cleaner for entry into world cinemas, protagonist of some of the biggest successes recorded for the seventh art, like the franchise Pirates of the Caribbean and the saga The Lord of the Rings. It is also a sex symbol which, after being married to the model Miranda Kerr, shares the life of singer Katy Perry.
Orlando Jonathan Blanchard Bloom was not born in Orlando, but in Canterbury, which is more chic. It was January 13, 1977. Her maternal family lived in Australia, India, Japan and Tasmania. Orlando grew up in the shadow of the famous Canterbury Cathedral and the University of Kent, when at 13 he discovered that his biological father was not the mother’s husband, Harry Bloom, a journalist and novelist from South Africa, but Colin Stone, mom’s ex-boyfriend. This family friend became the legal guardian of Orlando when Harry Bloom died in 1981, and therefore raised him.
To treat his dyslexia, his mother made him take acting lessons, which gave birth to his vocation. At the age of 16, he moved to London and widened his range by taking courses in comedy, photography and sculpture at Fine Arts College, then he joined the National Youth Theater and started his career with small roles on television, in the series Casualty and Inspector Barnaby, while continuing his studies. In 1997, at just twenty years old, he obtained his first role in the cinema in Oscar Wilde, a biopic of the famous writer.
Pointy ears
Two years later, and only two days after graduating from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, he obtained the role of Legolas in The Lord of the Rings, the trilogy ofheroic fantasy by Peter Jackson, after the work of Tolkien.
This monumental trilogy instantly made Orlando Bloom a world star, especially since between two episodes filmed in New Zealand, he found the time to play in The fall of the Black Falcon by Ridley Scott (2001), a war film that won two Oscars.
Decidedly a player in blockbuster franchises, Orlando Bloom is just emerging from Lord of the Rings when he joined the cast of another cinema monument from the 2000s: Pirates of the Caribbean. He will thus hold one of the main roles, that of the “nice” facing the devious Jack Sparrow embodied by Johnny Depp, in four episodes of the fantasy adventure saga. In 2004, he also held the poster for the peplum Sows, alongside Brad Pitt.
Bitter taste
After this series of popular triumphs, Orlando Bloom tastes the bitterness of semi-chess, with the historic fresco Kingdom of Heaven, by Ridley Scott, who offered him the leading role, as well as in the dramatic comedy Meeting in Elizabethtown Cameron Crowe, both released in 2005. It will then become more rare on the screens, returning with roles less exposed in films by authors. He also risked finding the stage for three plays, performed in London and New York, including one Romeo and Juliet de Shakespeare.
His attempt to return to the calibrated film to fill the multiplexes, with yet another version of the Three Musketeers by Paul W. Anderson in 2011, is again a semi-failure. If the films he then shoots, the thrillers Zulu in 2013 or Conspiracy in 2017, the drama Romans or the action movie The Shanghai Job in 2017, are so many films that do not add sparkle to his record, he can fortunately count on the loyalty of the public of his two franchises: in the 2010s, a Lord of the Rings and one Pirates of the Caribbean allow him to remain a bankable player, a safe bet, and to have his star on Hollywood Boulevard.
In 2019, he returns to television with the first role in a fantastic series, Carnival Row, produced by the Amazon Prime platform, where it has for partner the British model Cara Delevingne, who is well received and who will have a second season in 2020.
Big stars
As one of the beautiful kids of contemporary cinema, Orlando Bloom will have had life partners whose equal notoriety will have made him haunt the pages of celebrity magazines. He was first in a relationship with the American actress Kate Bosworth, from 2003 to 2006, then in November 2007 he frequented the Australian top model Miranda Kerr, whom he married in July 2010. The couple gave birth in January 2011 to a boy named Flynn Christopher. The model and actor announce their separation in October 2013, then their divorce.
In February 2016, he announced that he was in a relationship with pop singer Katy Perry, with whom he met Pope Francis a few months later. They announce their engagement in February 2019.
