Until 1472, the Orkney Islands were under Norwegian and Danish control.
Today, the archipelago with its 19,000 inhabitants is a region of Scotland and subject to British rule.
They are quite happy with that. To BBC says James Stockan, leader of Orkney’s local government, that both the Scottish and UK governments have “failed terribly”.
Tightens in
– Contributed over 40 years
The problem is inadequate funding for necessary investments, particularly in infrastructure, Stockan elaborates.
– We have contributed over 40 years with oil from the North Sea, but the return we get back is not sufficient to keep us going, he tells the BBC.
Now the local council on Orkney will investigate the possibilities for alternative forms of governance than the one they have today.
– Deep cultural ties
One proposal is what Stockan refers to as a “Nordic connection” with Norway, Denmark and Iceland.
– We were part of the Nordics for much longer than we have been part of Great Britain. People come up to me on the street and ask when we are going back to Norway. We have deep cultural ties, and now is the time to explore what is possible, says the local board chairman.
The matter will be heard next Tuesday.
