Orionid Meteor Shower 2023: Observing Conditions and Peak Times in Prague

On the night of Sunday, the maximum of the Orionid meteor shower will occur, 20 to 30 meteors can fly through the sky in an hour. It will be possible to observe them from 23.00 at the earliest, when they could already appear high enough above the horizon, the peak is expected before sunrise. This was reported by the information server of the Czech Astronomical Society. Swarm activity is gradual, lasting more than a month. The shower gets its name from the fact that meteors seem to fly out of the constellation Orion.

“Observing conditions during the peak of the Orionid meteor shower will be very good,” the website said. The moon will not interfere with the observation, as it will set before midnight.

“The appearance of bright meteors and bolides is expected,” the astronomers warned. The maximum of the Orionids occurs around 07:00, just before sunrise.

The Orionid Swarm is a stream of particles released by Halley’s Comet. Earth encounters them every year.

The Orionids are the second fastest swarm after November’s Leonids, entering the atmosphere at speeds of up to 66 kilometers per second. The light trails are visible seconds to minutes after the meteor flyby.

Earth also collides with a stream of particles from Halley’s comet in early May, this swarm is called the Aquarids. Particles ejected from a comet’s nucleus take an estimated centuries to millennia to reach Earth.

In addition to the mentioned Orionids, Leonids and Aquarids, other meteor showers also repeatedly enter the Earth’s atmosphere. In January they were the Quadrantids, in April the Lyrids and in August the Perseids. At the end of the year, the Geminids meteor shower will fly across the sky.
