“Very sad to hear the news of the passing of Colin Burgess,” AC/DC wrote on Instagram and X. “He was our first drummer and a highly respected musician. Happy memories, rock in peace Colin.”
Burgess was part of the original line-up of AC/DC. The band was founded in 1973 and, in addition to the drummer, consisted of guitarists Malcolm and Angus Young, bassist/saxophonist Larry Van Kriedt and singer Dave Evans. Burgess participated on the debut single ‘Can I Sit Next to You, Girl’, but was fired in early 1974 for allegedly being drunk during a performance.
Before joining AC/DC, Burgess was a member of the Australian rock band The Masters Apprentices from 1968 to 1972. The band scored a number of hits in the country at that time.
Burgess formed the band His Majesty in the 1980s with singer Yukiko Davis and guitarist Spike Williams. In 1993 he played drums on a cover of AC/DC’s ‘Highway to Hell’ by Tiny Tim. In 1988 he was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) for his contributions to The Masters Apprentices.
