BERLIN – For the ruling sovereigns in middle Europe, scandals seem to never end this week. According to the Polish portal Onet by David Manzheley, the organizer of last week’s gay party in Brussels attended by the MEP – now resigned and expelled from politics – of the majority Magyar party (Fidesz) József Szájer, several politicians from the PiS, Prawo i Sprawiedlywosc, that is the sovereign and clerical party returned to power in Poland in the autumn of 2015. As well as the most homophobic ruling party of the Union: it has a law ready that will prohibit any march, parade or public event of the LGBTQ community and of its organizations.
Manzheley says to Onet: “I have been organizing these parties for a couple of years, Poles and Hungarians are among the most frequent guests. At the last party there were Polish exponents, not MEPs but with important positions in the national parliament or in the government”. Also according to him, politicians from France, Ukraine, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Holland also participate in the festivities. “Szájer told me that he himself had previously organized such a party at his house,” continues Manzheley.

The Polish authorities meanwhile inform that Manzheley is a wanted offender in Poland with an international arrest warrant for fraud committed in the city of Wadowice. He defends himself by stating that it is a sensational misunderstanding with another person, 36 years old and not 29 years old like him, and assuring that he has never been to Wadowice.
Of course, it is not at all clear how much Manzheley is to be believed, who according to the Polish police is indeed wanted for corruption and at this moment probably has every interest in talking to the media as much as possible. Always a Onet, said he had counted at least nine members of Fidesz at the party, precisely Orbán’s party.

Whatever it is, in the same hours – informs the reliable Hungarian independent site Daily News Hungary – in Budapest (following the resignation of Szájer and his expulsion from Fidesz, imposed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán) a new scandal has broken out. Deputy Undersecretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Janos Nagy, was arrested for corruption, and investigations are underway against him.
The chain of scandals coincides with the week in which Orbán himself celebrates his record as the longest-serving Hungarian premier in history. And it follows two ugly Hungarian figures: first, the top responsible for cultural policy, Demeter Szilárd, compared the American tycoon benefactor of Hungarian Jewish origins, George Soros, to Hitler and the EU to the Third Reich, stating – he who imposed works in schools of fascist writers of the 1920s and 1930s – that Soros and the EU want “liberal Nazism and the liberal Shoah, with us Hungarians and Poles in the role that the Jews then had”. Then Tamás Deutsch, leader of the Fidesz group in the European Parliament, insulted the leader of the Popolari, the German Manfred Weber, saying that “towards Hungary he adopts behavior and words worthy of the Gestapo”.
Now the big question for public opinion is whether Szájer’s wife will ask for a divorce. Many bet yes, many others the opposite: she, Tünde Handó, former president and still a member of the Constitutional Court, is considered very powerful and a key figure in the Hungarian power, as the inspirer and co-author of the 2012 “illiberal democracy” Constitution. The scandal of the husband at the party could be too compromising for the leaders of Fidesz.
