Karaivaz was shot by two men in the Athenian district of Alimos, near his home. The autopsy revealed that Karaivaz was hit six times in the chest, twice in the head, once on the neck and once in a hand, according to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini. The police investigates camera images from the vicinity of the crime scene to find out more about the perpetrators. The blog, mobile phone and computer of the reporter are also investigated.
According to local media, it is suspected that the perpetrators are foreign hitmen, and investigators are concerned that the perpetrators have escaped abroad. A terrorist background has been ruled out by the authorities. The murder of Karaivaz has brought back memories in Greece of the murder of journalist Sokratis Giolias eleven years ago. Giolias was killed by 16 bullets in front of his house, with responsibility claimed by a far-left terrorist group.
Top priority
Greek security minister Michalis Chrysochoidis promised on Saturday that the killers of Karaivaz will be caught quickly. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said earlier that the matter will be given top priority.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the Twitter murder as “despicable and cowardly.” Von der Leyen called the freedom of the press “perhaps the holiest of all.” “Journalists must be able to work safely,” said von der Leyen.
