The Race of the Heart
35th edition
The sporting and solidarity challenge in favor of organ donation crosses your region
For 35 years, they have been running for life!
The Course du Cœur is a unique relay race of 750 km between Paris and Bourg Saint Maurice – Les Arcs. For 4 days and 4 nights, it brings together nearly 200 runners (employees of large companies or institutions), around 1 team of 15 transplant runners. The Course du Cœur also includes 150 volunteers to supervise the event, 60 to 80 km covered by each runner and more than 200 municipalities crossed. Throughout the race, these organ donation ambassadors meet the public.
Raising awareness at the heart of the journey
For this 35th edition, the Course du Cœur, organized by the Trans-Forme association, will continue to raise awareness among residents in new towns and villages through the “10,000 Hearts for the Hospital” operation. Children from around a hundred schools will come again this year, all along the route, to meet the convoy to encourage the runners and give the hearts made to the transplanted runners.
This operation is an opportunity for teachers to spend time in class informing and raising children’s awareness of the issue of organ donation. Children have the opportunity to create drawings, poems or make hearts of all kinds.
During the 2021 edition, more than 34,000 drawings of hearts were collected, made by more than 12,800 children throughout the course, from the 146 schools that took part in the operation, and bringing together more than 510 classes, including 220 high school students educated. Testimonial drawings of support and encouragement for transplant recipients and people awaiting transplant. This operation is implemented thanks to the enthusiasm of teachers and children, and with the help of volunteers.
Among the teams responsible for raising awareness of the general public on the course of the race, there are 5 actors who perform in schools and villages:
– A duo of clowns, Baba Boula & la Plume, from the “Cliniclown et Cie” association with the show “Les petits bobos de madame Gémalpartou”.
– The Tutti Quanti Company, with its show “Un Don pour La Vie”.

The repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic on transplant activity
For the past 2 years, the Covid-19 pandemic has had dramatic consequences on transplant activity. In 2020, only 4,417 transplants could be performed (a drop of 25%, or nearly 1,500 fewer transplants than in 2019).
In 2021, despite the health crisis, the teams in the removal and transplant departments showed unfailing commitment and demonstrated their resilience. Thanks to everyone’s mobilization and their ability to adapt, transplant activity was able to start rising again in 2021, with 5,273 transplants performed, an increase of 19.3% compared to 2020.
Despite this recovery, activity has not yet returned to its pre-Covid level (5,901 transplants in 2019 and 6,105 in 2017). Raising awareness of organ donation is therefore more important than ever. The list of people waiting for a transplant continues to grow… More than 24,000 people need an organ transplant and each year more than 200 people die for lack of receiving a transplant at time. About 63,000 people live in France thanks to a transplanted organ.
