Order for four new cruise ships: Rescue for Meyer Werft? | NDR.de – News – Lower Saxony

The Papenburg-based Meyer Werft shipyard says it will build four cruise ships for Disney Cruise Line. The large order shows that the shipyard’s ships are in demand, said Lower Saxony’s Economics Minister Lies.

This is the highest order value in the history of Meyer Werft, as the company announced on Monday. The four ships are to be delivered between 2027 and 2031. Details on the names, routes and designs of the cruise ships are still being planned. Meyer currently has orders from Disney for eight ships. The shipyard delivered the first ship for Disney in 2010 – the “Disney Dream”. “Our order book is growing to over 11 billion euros with the new orders,” said senior boss Bernard Meyer.

Economics Minister Lies: Shipyard ships are in demand

According to Lower Saxony’s Minister of Economic Affairs Olaf Lies (SPD), the planned delivery for Disney shows that the shipyard has a good order situation and a solid customer structure. The SPD politician is confident that the shipyard has a future. Thomas Gelder from IG Metall also shares this view: After the major order, the federal government has no choice but to help, he said.

Federal and state governments should guarantee

The new orders are seen as an important sign – especially in light of the fact that the federal and state governments are to guarantee guarantees by mid-September to keep the shipyard financially alive. The shipyard needs commitments of around 2.8 billion euros – guarantees and investments. And that by mid-September. So that banks can continue to give short-term loans and the shipyard can pay its employees. The federal and state governments are continuing to negotiate, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economic Affairs announced. There is no final result yet.
