The whale that ran aground in Cadzand, Zealand, did not survive yesterday afternoon. Attempts to bring the animal back into the sea have failed. The orca was in poor condition and was released from its misery around midnight.

The animal was discovered yesterday afternoon around 3:30 pm on Cadzand beach. Rescuers managed to turn it around and bring it back into the sea, but an hour later it came ashore 2.5 kilometers away.

She is a not yet fully grown female of 5.5 meters in length. Her condition has been worrying all evening, she told SOS Dolphin. The foundation is dedicated to cetaceans.

Killer whales are a kind of dolphin and live in groups. It is rare for an orca to wash up on the Dutch coast. The last time was in 2010.

The washed orca is brought to the University of Utrecht. There the animal is examined at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
