Orban first hinted at the possibility of Hungary’s exit from the EU

Orban enters new election campaign critical of EU

Hungarians choose a new parliament on April 3, Orban faces a united opposition for the first time, and now polls show that the chances of opponents are about equal.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Saturday for the first time hinted at the possibility of his country’s exit from the EU, the agency reports. DPA.

The European Union is waging a “holy war, jihad” under the slogan of the rule of law, the politician said in a speech to supporters in Budapest on Saturday.

At the same time, he demanded “tolerance” from the EU towards Hungary. Otherwise, according to him, it will be impossible to follow the common path.

“For them, the rule of law is a means by which they want to knead us into something similar to them,” Orban said.

But Hungary does not want to become like Western Europe, just as it does not expect the West to accept Hungarian asylum or family politics.

Orban said Hungary wants to keep the EU together “despite the growth of cultural alienation.” Therefore, Budapest has repeatedly made “offers of tolerance” to both Brussels and Berlin.

“There is no other solution, there is only tolerance. This is the only way we can find a common path,” Orban continued.

Orban spoke days before the EU Court of Justice is due to decide on a new rule of law mechanism. Under this scheme, countries that violate the principles of the rule of law can lose funds from the EU’s general budget. Hungary and Poland filed a complaint against the mechanism adopted in December 2020. The EU Court of Justice is due to rule on Wednesday.

About 80% of Hungary’s inhabitants support EU membership. In the past, Orban has made repeated attacks against “bureaucrats in Brussels” but has refrained from threatening to leave the bloc. His annual “address to the nation” on Saturday coincided with the start of the campaign. Hungarians elect a new parliament on 3 April. Orban faces a united opposition for the first time, and polls now show that the chances of opponents are about equal.
