Orange will open its 5G network to the general public on December 3 in 80% of the territory of 15 cities. By the end of the year, the operator estimates that it should reach 150 additional municipalities.
Four times higher flow rates to start
It could thus immediately outperform its competitors in terms of coverage. His boss Stéphane Richard told the Echos that 10% of the French population would thus be covered from 3 December. Nice, Angers, Marseille, Le Mans or Clermont-Ferrand will be concerned. They were chosen in particular on the basis of past 5G experiments. It promises speeds four times higher than 4G at first.
Orange does not intend to force its way into places where it will encounter resistance from local elected officials to activate its network, particularly in Paris. “We are for responsible 5G, ie respectful of cities and their position”, he told Echos.
Regarding frequency bands, the operator is betting above all on the 3.5 GHz obtained at auction. But it does not exclude the use of low frequencies in addition if the competition opens the ball. The use of DSS, or dynamic spectrum sharing, is discussed later, by 2023.
