ORANGE weather alert effective immediately: an order from the Mayor closes schools

With the Mayor’s Ordinance n°40 of 11/11/2024 the Municipal Operations Center of Caltanissetta declares active in the municipal territory of Caltanissetta the alert level ORANGE which corresponds to the operational phase of PRE-ALARM.

The ordinance provides, with immediate effect and for November 12, 2024:

  • the closure of all schools of all levels including nursery schools and higher education institutions, including the educational activities of “Vincenzo Bellini” Conservatory of Music and of University Consortium;
  • the closure to the public of municipal cemetery, without prejudice, however, to the urgent needs of users and without prejudice to the obligation for the municipal staff in charge to normally go to their workplace, also in order to ensure the necessary urgent, non-extendable, ordinary and/or extraordinary services;
  • the closure to the public of sports facilities and of ville and gods gardens e public playgrounds or open to the public, municipal or otherwise;
  • the annulment of each civil and military demonstration carried out outdoors;
  • the closure of nature reserves to the public Mount Capodarso e Broken Lake and the Park” Depths”;

The responsibility to evaluate the opportunity to adopt precautionary measures is left to the other public bodies providing services, without prejudice to the essential services to be provided.

This ordinance was issued after:

Noting that there is the possibility of scattered to widespread precipitation, including showers or thunderstorms, in the western sectors,
southern and ionic, with contributions to the ground ranging from moderate to occasionally high, up to very high on the north-eastern ionic side of the island, where the phenomena will take on a more persistent character; scattered, even in the form of downpours or storms, over the rest of Sicily, with moderate cumulative quantities;

Considering that Caltanissetta is home to Higher Education and University Institutes with students coming every day from other nearby municipalities via public road transport, and that the current weather situation and that forecast for tomorrow mean that the roads may be invaded by slush, with consequent danger for road traffic and the safety of students;

Citizens are advised to:

  • limit your movements to the bare minimum and in any case adopt every possible precaution, paying attention to the current weather conditions and always consulting the weather forecasts from institutional sites, such as for example:
  • National Civil Protection Department – protezionecivile.gov.it/
  • Civil Protection Regulatory Department – protezionecivilesicilia.it/it/
  • Sicilian Agrometeorological Information Service – sias.regione.sicilia.it
  • Air Force Meteorological Service – meteoam.it
  • do not use the car unless absolutely necessary, and in case of snow, observing the obligation to travel with chains or approved winter tyres, as required by the Highway Code;
  • give the maximum be careful when driving on the roadespecially at bridges and crossings of streams and waterways, especially along rural roads;
  • do not park under trees or near metal structures and not, especially if vertically developed, such as: poles and pylons of antennas and electrical and telephone networks, sheds, gates and railings etc., as they can easily be struck by lightning; and in any case they are subject to being easily damaged by wind or intense precipitation (rain and snow).
