Orange vigilance in Eure-et-Loir and Yvelines, due to the risk of thunderstorms

Following the heatwave episode, defined by meteorologists as “early and intense”, which affected a major part of France and in particular Eure-et-Loir: many departments are now placed on orange alert, due to the risk of thunderstorms that may occur this Sunday, June 19.

If 31 departments of metropolitan France remain concerned by orange vigilance linked to high temperatures, 33, including Eure-et-Loir, are placed under vigilance of the same color because of a “strongly stormy situation in summer which requires special surveillance in view of the violent phenomena foreseen”.

Heat wave vigilance: yellow, orange, red and level 2, 3, 4 alerts… what does this mean?

What forecast this Sunday?

“Cooler air poured in on the western side and the north-west of the country at the end of the night, and the temperatures this morning were therefore often more bearable”, underline the specialists of Meteo France.

In this early morning on Sunday, stormy showers affect the west of the
Centre-Val de Loire and evacuated to Île-de-France.

The weather gradually becomes calm again in the morning and most often sunny until late afternoon. However, a few showers or thunderstorms can occur from time to time.

But it’s early evening, that more organized storms will come up from the southwest. They will cross all of Centre-Val de Loire and Sarthe and then head towards Île-de-France.

A gradual calm is expected in the second part of the night, from Sunday to Monday.

These storms can be violent. They will be accompanied by intense electrical activity, violent downpours (total rainfall of 20 to 40 mm in one hour) and sometimes heavy hailstorms (hailstones of several cm could be locally observed).

On Saturday June 18, the record of 37.7°C observed during the month of June was equaled in Eure-et-Loir. It is Nogent-le-Rotrou, which now shares this heat peak with Châteaudun, where 37.7 ° C had also been recorded in June 2019.

Do not take shelter under the trees. Avoid using the telephone and electrical devices. Beware of the risk of flooding in cellars and low points. Significant damage is locally to be feared on light habitats and temporary installations. A few outbreaks of fires may be recorded in the forest following lightning strikes not accompanied by precipitation: if you witness them, report them without delay.
