Scientists from the University of Birmingham believe that the reason for the increase in the number of cases of throat cancer over the past 20 years may be due to oral sex, which contributes to the transmission of the human papillomavirus. According to The Conversation, HPV is also the leading cause of cervical cancer.

Currently, oropharyngeal cancer in the US and UK is more common than cervical cancer.

According to scientists, HPV is sexually transmitted.

The article says that for oropharyngeal cancer the main risk factor is the number of sexual partners. Those who have six or more oral sex partners in their lifetime are 8.5 times more likely to develop oropharyngeal cancer than those who do not practice oral sex.

As noted, HPV can be completely eliminated, but the characteristics of the immune system of some people lead to the development of cancer.

To combat the spreading risk of laryngeal cancer, researchers are reminding people to get vaccinated against the human papillomavirus. In many countries this vaccine is given to women to reduce their chances of getting cervical cancer, but research has also shown that the vaccine is effective in preventing throat cancer.
