[라포르시안] Yongin Severance Hospital announced on the 29th that a team of professor Kim Jin-kwon of neurology and Professor Song Tae-jin of neurology at Ewha University Seoul Hospital confirmed that there is a correlation between oral health and lipid levels in blood.
For this study, Prof. Jin-kwon Kim’s team followed up 65,000 subjects for oral examinations for national health check-ups for about five years.
As a result, patients with periodontitis showed lower levels of HDL cholesterol, which has a protective effect against cardiovascular disease. In addition, triglyceride levels increased when there was a tooth defect.
Conversely, when brushing frequently, HDL cholesterol levels were high and triglyceride levels were low.
High levels of HDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, which are’good cholesterol’, help smooth blood circulation and lower the risk of angina and myocardial infarction. Conversely, when triglycerides accumulate in the body, it can cause dyslipidemia such as hypertriglyceridemia.
Professor Kim Jin-kwon said, “Through this study, we have confirmed that there is a correlation between oral health and lipid levels in the blood.” That is the meaning of this study,” he said.
The research results were published in the December 2020 issue of’Journal of Clinical Periodontology’, an SCI-level international journal.
