Oral Amoxicillin Treatment for Neonates: Effective and Safe Option for Non-Life-Threatening Infections

The researchers conclude that neonates treated with oral amoxicillin in the first weeks of life achieve adequate amoxicillin levels with a twice-daily dosing schedule. This concerns non-life-threatening sick newborns with an infection. The dosage recommendations will be included in the Children’s Formulary.

The pharmacokinetic data of approximately 260 neonates with an average birth weight of 2.6 kg were analyzed during this study. This provides sufficient evidence to implement oral therapy in this young target group, the researchers indicate. Newborns no longer need to stay in the hospital during amoxicillin treatment.

The results confirm the findings from the previous RAIN study, which compared oral administration with intravenous administration and was found to be just as effective. In that study, 510 babies were followed in seventeen Dutch hospitals.
