The Phare circus troupe returns to France for the 4th consecutive year with its show “L’Or Blanc”.
In the Khmer language, the word “manger“cannot be expressed without the word”riz“. Cambodians are born, live, work and die in paddy fields. Rice is eaten morning, noon and evening. Rice represents Cambodia’s wealth but also how Cambodia is exploited by the outside world.
“White gold” refers to the role of rice in Cambodia. The story begins with a celebration of people’s respect for rice. After accidentally damaging his father’s mandala, our main character finds himself expelled from his village, into a world where rice becomes trade and forced labor. As community values evolve towards monetary interest, they find themselves immersed in competition, jealousy, greed, self-interest.
“White Gold” follows an individual and their community as they strike a balance between the needs of the modern world, community and Buddhist teachings of restraint.
