Optimized Charging: The Key to Extending the Lifespan of Your Apple Watch

Apple Watch, like iPhones, supports the optimized charging function
This will make your watch last longer if you plan to use it for several years at a time

Not so long ago, we highlighted a practical feature on the new iPhone 15 that can force limited charging to 80%, thus protecting the battery in the longer term. After all, if you charge your battery carefully, you can count on it to be in good condition for a long time – so in the end, you won’t have to upgrade to a new device as often. And the Apple Watch has a similar gadget.

The right way to charge

Last year, Apple introduced an optimized charging feature for Apple Watch users with the watchOS 9 update. It’s not exactly a new thing, but it’s very likely that a lot of you don’t know about it.

However, thanks to the optimized charging function, you guarantee that your watch will not overcharge. The system inside ensures that the watch is always charged to a maximum of 80% when you don’t need it, such as if you leave it on the charger overnight. They will then recharge to a full 100% shortly before your alarm goes off and you are likely to put them back on.

Don’t overlook

What Apple did not brag about: the iPhone 15 can extremely extend the battery life

Apple Watch learns these patterns of behavior thanks to artificial intelligence. In short, the goal is to guarantee that the battery inside the watch remains in ideal condition for as long as possible, i.e. that it does not charge over 80% and at the same time does not discharge below 20%. “With optimized charging, Apple Watch learns from your daily charging habits and improves battery life,” stands on the website Apple.

How to set up optimized charging on Apple Watch?

We definitely recommend activating optimized charging on your watch. You do so in the settings directly on the Apple Watch. In the application menu, select Settings –> Battery –> Battery health and there is the Optimized charging item. In addition, right below you can check the current percentage condition of your watch – the lower the value, the greater the degradation of the battery and the associated worse real endurance per charge.

Optimized charging is supported by the Apple Watch Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra 1 and 2, as well as the latest generation of the cheaper Apple Watch SE. Interestingly, the Ultra models have this feature forced on by default.
