Optimal Conditions for Observing the Perseid Shooting Stars in Baden-Württemberg

When the particularly productive Perseid shooting star stream reaches its peak at the weekend, Baden-Württemberg could be a good place for star lovers. The German Weather Service (DWD) does not expect ideal conditions in the southwest, but they do expect favorable conditions for the annual spectacle in the night sky. “It is already clear on Thursday and Friday nights, and we do not expect dense clouds at the weekend either,” said a DWD meteorologist. “Maybe it won’t be entirely starry, but it should be enough.”

Numerous shooting stars in the night sky

The Perseids are a recurring meteor shower that produce numerous shooting stars every year in mid-August. They consist of the decay products of a comet. They got their name because they seem to come from the constellation Perseus. This constellation is located below the big W, Cassiopeia. Some of the shooting stars can already be observed.

This is a particularly good way of observing the Perseids

In order to be able to see the swarm of the Perseids particularly well, onlookers should avoid bright cities, according to the Association of Star Friends (VdS) in Heppenheim in southern Hesse. “At the same time, you should have as clear an all-round view as possible, for example on a hill,” said astronomer and VdS spokeswoman Carolin Liefke. The observation conditions are best around 3 a.m. The VdS recommends simply lying down on a meadow with an open sky on a clear night and looking up.

The Perseids could also be observed in the evening, but then there would probably be less to see, it said. The astronomers expect the maximum of the Perseids on Sunday morning.
