During a recent episode of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” show, Winfrey clarified the motives behind her departure, citing her desire to freely discuss weight-loss issues unrestricted by her affiliation with WeightWatchers. The acclaimed talk show host had previously admitted to taking a weight-loss drug, prompting her to prioritize the ability to candidly address a wide range of weight management issues in the future.

About her departure, Winfrey stated, “I decided [to leave the WeightWatchers board] because this special was really important to me, and I wanted to be able to talk about whatever I want to talk about.” Winfrey, who is set to host a captivating hour-long ABC primetime special entitled “An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution” on Monday, March 18, looks forward to exploring the role of weight-loss drugs, including Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy, alongside a panel of medical experts.

Eliminating Conflict of Interest

By departing from the WeightWatchers board, Winfrey believes she has removed any potential conflicts of interest between the company’s involvement in weight health and the administration of weight-loss medications. Addressing her decision, she remarked, “I did not want to have the appearance of any conflict of interest,” thereby prioritizing her commitment to impartial and unbiased weight management discussions.

As a token of her gratitude and to alleviate any possible skepticism surrounding her financial gains, Winfrey plans to donate her shares in WeightWatchers to the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). WeightWatchers made a significant move in 2023 by acquiring Sequence, a telehealth subscription service dedicated to facilitating weight management through prescription medications like Ozempic. Winfrey’s Shareholdings

Having accumulated a 1.43% stake in WW International, the parent company of WeightWatchers, Winfrey serves as a significant investor, possessing approximately 1.1 million shares. Based on current market prices, her holdings are valued at approximately $2.5 million. Winfrey’s initial investment worth $43.2 million highlights her unwavering conviction in the company’s future.

NMAAHC Support and Donations

Echoing their agreement with Winfrey’s decision, the WeightWatchers board of directors announced their full support for Winfrey’s proposal to donate all her shares to the NMAAHC. Stressing the organization’s commitment to celebrate the achievements of African Americans and to address any perceived conflicts of interest, the board articulated Winfrey’s intent to donate proceeds from potential future exercises of her WW stock options to the NMAAHC.
