The American TV star Oprah Winfrey has been on the forest fire-stricken island of Maui in Hawaii in recent days. There, together with the TV channel CBS in tow, she has helped with the emergency relief work on the island, writes Sky News.
But somewhere on the island she didn’t get the cameras. Because when she and the channel wanted to enter the War Memorial Complex, where several evacuees are staying, they were flatly refused by the local authorities.
– Out of respect for those who have come to seek safety and shelter at the shelters, it is still our policy that the media is not allowed access, says a statement according to Sky News.
– Hell on earth
Got in
The TV star was finally allowed in, but then the cameras had to be left outside, Maui County writes on Facebook.
– To clarify: Oprah visited our shelter, and we thank her for asking journalists and camera crews to stay outside, they write.
Furthermore, they write that the TV star’s visit to the crisis center was heartwarming.
Several photos of Oprah inside at least one of the shelters have been shared on social media. In a video, you can see, among other things, that she helps hand out pillows to the evacuees.
The Hollywood star in mourning
Deadliest in over 100 years
The death toll in the city of Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui has risen to 93. The wildfire here is the deadliest recorded in the United States in over a hundred years.
The latest death toll was announced by the authorities on Maui on Sunday morning Norwegian time. At the same time, the critical voices are getting louder about whether the authorities could have reacted better and faster to the disaster. Some of the criticism is that warning sirens were not used during the first phase of the fire.
The small town of Lahaina was particularly hard hit by the flames, and many of the streets look like a burnt-out war zone. The rescue work was difficult, as there is only one road leading in and out of the city.
