The new performing arts site in Leuven will replace the former Sint-Pietersziekenhuis, which has since been demolished, on Brusselsestraat in the center of the city. The new building houses various spaces and halls for concerts, performances and conferences, and has a roof terrace and a garden. The performing arts hall will feature a digital work of art worth 280,000 euros.
The cost price for the entire project has been revised upwards several times and is currently estimated at at least 80 million euros. Opposition party N-VA has already been critical of that cost price during previous municipal councils, and did so again on Monday evening. “We like the idea of building a new performing arts hall per se good, but we are not satisfied with the location and the high cost,” says council member Katelijne Dedeurwaerder.
