Opposition Protests in Belgrade for Repeat Elections and President’s Resignation

Opposition protests continue in Belgrade on December 30, calling for repeat parliamentary elections and the resignation of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. On Saturday, a rally takes place in the central square of the Serbian capital Terazije next to the Moscow Hotel. How notes RT in the Balkans, this time there were significantly more demonstrators than in previous days of protests, which have been going on for almost two weeks.

The day before, representatives of student organizations blocked the government quarter of Belgrade for a day, demanding to reveal the lists of voters who voted in the parliamentary elections. Later, the blockade grew into a demonstration of thousands.

The rally is organized by the Proglas movement, transmits telegram channel “Serbian Messenger”. Leaders and supporters of the opposition coalition “Serbia Against Violence” come to the demonstration, as in previous days, in the hundreds.

The protesters demand that the authorities publish the CEC documents and annul the results of the parliamentary elections. Demonstrators accuse the authorities of fraud and centralized transportation of pro-government voters. There are no clashes with security forces.

“It’s noticeable that they took the organization more seriously – curators are working, handing out leaflets <…> Vucic is presented with an ultimatum – if the Serbian leader refuses to “recognize the theft of votes,” he is threatened with a repetition of the events of October 5, 2000, when Slobodan Milosevic was overthrown,” reports RT in the Balkans.

An eyewitness told RTVI that after the speech of opposition leaders on Terazije, protesters marched to the building of the Serbian Central Election Commission, and then to the building of the Constitutional Court. The protesters symbolically showed the court a “red card.”
