Opposite Reims Cathedral, Place du Chapitre will regain its former glory

Place du Chapitre, this small historic square in the heart of Reims will soon be transformed. It is accessed by the emblematic door of the Chapter, this element dating from the Middle Ages with its two turrets. Abandoned and aging, this place offers a unique view of the north portal of the cathedral.

For the mayor of Reims, Arnaud Robinet, who came to present the project within the framework of a consultation with the inhabitants, it is a question of “upgrading this place, giving this place back its luster and its charm”. It should be noted that since its post-war reconstruction, this axis has never been redesigned.

“We want to reveal the past of this place and preserve the idea of this historic square. This citadel of the Chapter once formed a small town in Reims”, explains Benjamin Kieffer, from the firm Leclercq et Associés. To remodel this space, street furniture and in particular benches will be installed. Until March 10, residents are even invited to vote online for their favorite layouts: central bench, wooden or stone plots… As for vegetation, the chestnut trees will be kept and other species planted to recreate the “secret” spirit of this place.

The team of landscapers and urban planners have worked to preserve its intimate character. “It was an orderly place, which was gradually invaded by vehicles. We want to reveal the view of the cathedral”, continues the architect Benjamin Kieffer Access under the door of the Chapter will therefore be inaccessible to cars and reserved for pedestrians and cyclists. Only five parking spaces will remain instead of the existing thirty. The first surveys ahead of archaeological excavations will begin in March. Once the excavations have been completed, the work can then start in 2024 for delivery in 2025. The total cost of the work is nearly one million euros.

To vote until March 10, 2023, it’s here.
