We generally call them folding smartphones because the idea is that the plastic OLED panel used can be folded and therefore the smartphone will do the same. It has undoubtedly been true to this day, with smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy Z Flip, Motorola RAZR or Huawei Mate XS. But the paradigm is evolving and OPPO is the first to show something concrete in this regard. It does this with OPPO X 2021 a rollable (or sliding) smartphone unique in the world.

What we have touched with our hands is OPPO X 2021, a smartphone that is more than a prototype and that we have been told sooner or later will arrive on the market (and will be in 2021, given the name). We doubt it will actually be sold in this form, given that the absence of selfie camera and physical keys for the volume could be a very big obstacle for those who want to spend the amount that will be required for this product. We do not know what amount it can be but if we had to bet it could be something that orbits around € 2000.
This smartphone uses a very ingenious system to do slide the screen to the side, rolling it up on itself and then spreading the “fold” on a very large surface and thus making sure that this same fold is not visible, and indeed it seems so from the product we tested.
The screen is from 6.7 inches and becomes 7.4 when extended. All other specifications are unknown. We only know that the camera is a 48 megapixel camera and that there are no secondary sensors but two ToFs.
There are many things we would like to know about this device, or even better what its final form will be, but there is no doubt that this solution is among the most intriguing among those proposed in the world of leaflets. No sharp creases and the possibility, for the bravest, to change format even with one hand.
