Statistics from Counterpoint Research indicate that Oppo is now the top-selling smartphone brand in China for the first time in history. In January, Oppo managed to capture 21% of the world’s largest smartphone market to date, beating Vivo and Huawei, which both reached 20%. Xiaomi and Apple filled the top five with 16% each.
Oppo’s sales were up 26% year-over-year and 33% in the past month. In its analysis of the latest Reno 5 series, Counterpoint said it succeeded because of the improved features at a lower price.
Commenting on OPPO’s rise in the market, Varun Mishra, Principal Analyst at Counterpoint Research, said:
“OPPO has successfully repositioned its product lines in 2022. Rebranding the Reno series and launching a more capable device at a lower price than its predecessor has helped OPPO capture the high-end affordable segment . The strong momentum of the A-series in the mid-segment has bolstered OPPO’s product portfolio and been able to meet China’s 5G demand across a wide price range. This was further helped by the decline of Huawei.
Counterpoint points out that Huawei has focused more on the high-end market due to component shortages caused by US sanctions. Chinese distributors have used other brands for volume. In addition to sanctions, Huawei’s sale of Honor will further reduce its market share, as Honor is now seen as a competitor rather than an asset.

In 2022, Counterpoint expects Huawei to lose even more market share. With its new flagship phone, the Find X3 Pro, Oppo is looking to seize the opportunity with the launch of the device.
