Oppo captures smartphone design with stylish slim housing, full screen design and under-screen camera, a round quad camera and a 3.5mm jack.
Oppo now has a wide range of mobile phones, four of which became high-end earlier this year Oppo Find X2 smartphones and three new models were recently released within the innovative Reno series, the Reno 4, Reno 4 Pro in Reno 4 Z. All mentioned models are 5G phones with interesting specs. In addition, Oppo has already announced various A-series smartphones this year, which cover the budget segment – think of the Oppo A53 in A72.

What can we expect from Oppo in the smartphone field in the coming period? The Chinese manufacturer is known for producing stylish and solid devices. A new patent indicates that Oppo wants to implement various interesting design innovations.
Slim Oppo smartphone with camera below the screen
At the end of 2019, Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications filed a design patent with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Office) for a smartphone model with a special design. The documentation was published on October 23, 2020 and includes 22 product images of an as yet unannounced Oppo phone.
The smartphone has a very futuristic look, partly because the device is very thin. The entire front consists of screen surface, only a small frame edge is visible at the top and bottom. Incidentally, it is a rounded display, as Oppo has used more often recently – including the Find X2 / X2 Pro and the Reno4 Pro.
The selfie camera is not visible, most likely it will be placed below the screen. In the coming year, more mobile phones are expected with one under-screen camera. Oppo has also demonstrated this innovative technology several times last year, but the image quality was not yet sufficient to apply, the Vice President of Oppo reported at the time.
By placing the camera under the screen, an extra large screen surface can be created – without indentations. This provides an extra sleek look. To be on the safe side, Oppo has also had the same phone model recorded with a hole-punch camera. If the technology is not yet sufficiently developed, Oppo could also opt for a hole in the screen.
On the back of the patented Oppo mobile phone a round camera system has been installed. In Oppo’s current range, there is only one phone model with a round camera system; the Oppo Ace 2, which was announced in April 2020. This forward-thinking phone has good specs and an affordable price tag, but unfortunately the Reno Ace and Ace 2 never released in the Netherlands. It could well be that the patented phone turns out to be the Oppo Ace 3.
5G smartphone with quad camera and 3.5mm headphone jack
The layout of the quad-camera system is also slightly different. Three camera lenses are placed horizontally next to each other. An extra camera is placed above it and the flash is placed at the bottom. Unfortunately, the design patent does not contain any information regarding the camera lenses used. Presumably it is at least a wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens.
All recent top models from Oppo have at least 5x Hybrid zoom, so it is certainly not inconceivable that such a function will also be found in this model. All the more so because the camera system protrudes from the housing, a trend that we have seen more often recently – especially with the telephone models with a large zoom range.
This line of thought is confirmed by the LetsGoDigital design team, who studied the renders and came to the conclusion that the camera part 1/6from part of the total thickness. In comparison, that is exactly the same as with the Reno4 with 5x Hybrid Zoom. With the Reno4 Pro, which has 10x Hybrid Zoom, the camera part covers 1/5from part of the total thickness.
The physical buttons are also special. On the left side is a long button for the volume settings, on the right side the power button is located. However, the buttons are slightly recessed in the frame, so that the sides look completely smooth.
No buttons and / or connectors are visible at the top, the bottom provides access to the USB Type-C connector and the SIM compartment. A microphone and speaker have also been installed here. Also striking is the addition of a 3.5mm headphone jack. Although this connection can be found in fewer and fewer telephone models in recent years, it seems to be on the rise again.
Oppo has still equipped its cheap models with a 3.5mm connection – including the recently introduced Reno4 Z and A53. It is possible that the headphone jack will also be found in mid-range and / or high-end Oppo smartphones next year.
The patented Oppo phone is a particularly beautifully designed device. The slim character, combined with the full screen design and the under-screen camera give this smartphone a luxurious appearance, combined with the round camera system on the back, this device is clearly designed differently than most models that you can buy in 2020.
Whether and when Oppo will release this smartphone remains unknown for the time being. This may be the Oppo Ace 3. This phone series was created exactly one year ago, with the introduction of the Reno Ace. In April this year, its successor, the Ace 2, was announced – this was Oppo’s first smartphone with support for 65W SuperVooC 2.0 fast charging technology combined with 40W AirVooC wireless charging. It is possible that the Ace 3 will be unveiled soon, although it cannot be ruled out that we will have to be patient a bit longer.
