Nominations for the 96th edition of the Oscars were announced at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on Thursday. The most awards – 13 – went to “Oppenheimer” directed by Christopher Nolan. The closest to this achievement were “Poor Things” (Yorgos Lanthimos) with 11 nominations and “Bloody Moon” (Martin Scorsese) with 10.

As usual, Netflix received the most nominations among producers – 18 (including “Maestro” – 7). Next in line were: Apple Original Films (mainly “Bloody Moon”), Searchlight (“Poor Things”) and Universal (“Oppenheimer”) – each with 13, Warner Bros. (“Barbie”) – 9, A24 and Neon – 7 each, Walt Disney, Focus Features and Orion Pictures/Amazon MGM Studios – 5 each.

The creators of “Barbie” were disappointed. The highest-grossing film of last year received eight nominations, and the following were omitted: director Greta Gerwig and title actress Margot Robbie.

This time there were no Polish emotions, because “The Peasants”, presented as our candidate for the Oscar, no longer made it to the so-called short list in the best international film category and were not taken into account on Thursday. There were hopes that the nominated feature-length animated films might be included in the voting, but this did not happen.

A total of five nominations were received by “Strefa Biznesu” and it will be the favorite among international films. The picture set in a concentration camp during World War II (talking mainly about the camp commandant Rudolf Höss and his family) represents Great Britain, but with Polish participation. Łukasz Żal was responsible for the photos, and the producers included Ewa Puszczyńska (Extreme Emotions, producer of such films as “Ida” and “Cold War”), Magdalena Malisz and Bartek Rainski.
