Oppenheimer Wins Seven Awards, Including Best Film, at BAFTA Film Awards
The BAFTA Film Awards took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall, and it was Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer that emerged as the big winner of the night. The epic biographical thriller took home a total of seven awards, including Best Film, Director, Actor (Cillian Murphy), Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Editing (Jennifer Lame), Cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), and Original Score (Ludwig Goransson).
From the very beginning, Oppenheimer was on a winning streak, securing the first categories it was eligible for. However, Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction managed to snag the award for Adapted Screenplay early on, marking its only win of the night. Another film that had a successful showing was The Zone of Interest, which won three awards, including Sound, Outstanding British Film, and Film Not in the English Language.
Searchlight’s Poor Things also had a strong presence at the BAFTA Film Awards, taking home five awards. Emma Stone won the Leading Actress category for her role in the film, and Poor Things also secured wins in Costume, Make Up & Hair, Production Design, and Special Visual Effects.
The Holdovers, a film from Focus, won two categories: Supporting Actress for Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Casting. However, there were a few notable films that were entirely shut out at the awards ceremony. Killers of the Flower Moon, which had nine nominations, failed to secure any wins. Similarly, Bradley Cooper’s Netflix entry Maestro, which had seven nominations, and Warner Bros and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, the biggest box office movie of 2023, also went home empty-handed.
The BAFTA Film Awards provided a glimpse into the potential winners at the upcoming Oscars. With Oppenheimer leading in nominations and securing multiple wins, it is likely to be a strong contender at the Dolby on March 10.
Overall, the BAFTA Film Awards celebrated the best of the film industry, recognizing outstanding performances, direction, screenplay, and technical achievements. The event was hosted by David Tennant and featured a star-studded lineup of nominees and presenters. As the winners were announced, the excitement and anticipation for the upcoming Oscars continued to build.
