Oppenheimer Sweeps Oscars Ceremony with 13 Nominations; Surprises and Upsets Await

Hollywood celebrities will gather tonight to celebrate the best performances in cinema at the annual Oscars ceremony, which this year is expected to turn into a celebration of Oppenheimer’s film.

Media personality Jimmy Kimmel returns for the fourth time to present the most important awards ceremony in the film industry, from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. The live broadcast on ABC begins at 23:00 GMT, an hour earlier than usual.

“Oppenheimer,” a three-hour drama film directed by Christopher Nolan, leads the race with 13 nominations and is the favorite to win the prestigious Best Picture award, crowning its sweep at other major awards this year.

“Surprises”

“If Oppenheimer doesn’t take home the Best Picture award, it will be one of the biggest upsets, if not the biggest, in Oscars history,” said Scott Feinberg, executive awards editor at The Hollywood Reporter.

After the Oscars ceremony in 2023 was marred by strikes by actors and writers, this year’s ceremony gives Hollywood an opportunity to celebrate two films that achieved global success.

Both “Oppenheimer” and the popular doll movie “Barbie,” the other best picture contender, earned $2.4 billion in the summer box office competition dubbed “Parpenheimer.”

Oscar organizers said they had planned unannounced honorary appearances and other surprises to entertain audiences at home.

Agence France-Presse said that, despite the odds that the film “Oppenheimer” will win the largest number of Oscars tonight, attention is also directed to the film “Anatomy Dawn Shot,” which may overturn these expectations during the 96th awards ceremony.

It is at least almost certain that the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay will go to this French film, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, after having previously won it at the Golden Globe and BAFTA ceremonies (reserved for the British Film Awards).

“Daughters of Olfa”

As for winning in another category, including Best Picture, if it happens, it will be a resounding achievement for Justine Trier, the only woman nominated in the Best Director category.

In addition, the name of the film by Tunisian director Kawthar Ben Haniyeh stands out, which was included in the list of finalists for the Best Documentary Film Awards.

Ben Hania presented the film “Daughters of Olfa”, which tells a realistic story about a mother and her four daughters, facing a difficult reality that leads to two of them joining ISIS.

Last year, the film won 3 awards at the Cannes Film Festival. These are the “Golden Eye” award, the “Positive Cinema” award, and the “Special Mention” award from the Francois Chaly Society, which has been presenting awards on the sidelines of the festival for 27 years.

The film also won the French Lumiere Award, the Orient Award at the Red Sea Film Festival, and finally the prestigious French César Award.
