Oppenheimer: Christopher Nolan’s Latest Film Gets R-Rating, Features Star-Studded Cast, and Exclusive IMAX 70mm Screenings

A new TV spot has been released for Oppenheimer, the upcoming film directed by Christopher Nolan. The spot reveals that the film has an official rating „R“which is Nolan’s first film with this designation since Insomnia from 2002. And a special surprise awaits Czech viewers as well.

The Associated Press has also confirmed the rating that the film contains “a bit of sexuality, nudity and language.”

Cillian Murphy plays American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, considered the father of the atomic bomb. They continue to act in the film například Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Josh Peck a David Dastmalchian. The film will hit theaters on July 21.

The highlight of the film is the explosion of the first atomic bomb, which Nolan reconstructed with his special effects team. “We knew this had to be the main draw,” Nolan told the AP. “We’re now able to do things with image that we could only do with sound before, in terms of having an out-of-the-ordinary impact on the audience—almost a physical feeling of responding to the film.”

THE OVERALL PICTURE

Film „Oppenheimer“ it was shot on some of the best, highest definition film cameras out there. As „Dunkirk“ a „Tenet” was „Oppenheimer“ shot exclusively on large-format film, which means a combination of 65mm IMAX and 65mm Panavision, which is then projected in 70mm format.

“The sharpness, clarity and depth of the image is unmatched,” Nolan said, adding: “The main thing for me is that when you shoot on 70mm IMAX film, you really make the screen disappear. You get the feeling of 3D without glasses. You have a huge screen and fill the peripheral vision of the audience. You immerse them in the world of the film.”

WHY IS IT FILMED ON 65MM FILM AND PROJECTED ON 70MM?

The 5mm difference comes from when this extra space on film had to be reserved for the soundtrack. With digital audio it is unnecessary and it is about “purely visual enhancement”, Nolan explained.

DO DIFFERENT FORMATS HAVE AN INFLUENCE ON THE WAY THE FILM IS SHOT?

“We have to plan very carefully because shooting an IMAX film captures a lot of information,” he said. “Your film will transfer very well to all formats because you get the maximum amount of visual information. However, there are different canvas shapes – what we call aspect ratio. What you need to plan is how you will then frame your picture so that it can be presented in different theaters with equal success.”

In the largest presentations, IMAX 1.43:1, the screen essentially disappears for the audience. For other formats, such as 35mm, the top and bottom will be cropped.

However, Nolan said that “creatively, we’ve learned over the years that composition is not a compromise”.

IMAX also said that Oppenheimer will be shown in selected thirty theaters worldwide with IMAX 70mm film, providing an exceptional and unique way to experience the film as director Christopher Nolan envisioned. Along with nineteen American, six Canadian, three British and one Australian cinemas, there is also Prague’s IMAX Flora. Czech viewers will therefore be able to enjoy the best world quality as the only ones in the entire European Union.
