Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” – with 13 nominations – became the leader of nominations for the 96th Oscars. 11 nominations went to Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” and 10 to Scorsese’s “Bloody Moon.” The British-Polish-American co-production Glazer’s “Strefa biznes” has a chance to win five awards.
Nominations for the 96th Oscars were announced on Tuesday on the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ YouTube profile. The names of the nominees were read by actress Zazie Beetz and actor and screenwriter Jack Quaid.
The leader in the Oscar race was “Oppenheimer” by Christopher Nolan. The story about the “father of the atomic bomb” received as many as 13 nominations – for best film, director, adapted screenplay, set design, costumes, cinematography, editing, make-up and hairstyles, sound, music, as well as for a leading actor (Cillian Murphy), a supporting actor ( Robert Downey Jr.) and a supporting actress (Emily Blunt).
Just behind “Oppenheimer” – with 11 nominations – was “Poor Creatures” by Yorgos Lanthimos. The film can be appreciated in the categories of best film, director, leading actress (Emma Stone), supporting actor (Mark Ruffalo), adapted screenplay, set design, costumes, cinematography, editing, makeup and hairstyles, and music.
A maximum of 10 awards can go to the creators of Martin Scorsese’s “Blood Moon”. They received a chance to win Oscars for best film, director, leading actress (Lily Gladstone), supporting actor (Robert De Niro), for set design, costumes, cinematography, editing, music and song (“Wahzhazhe – A Song For My People”).
Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is competing for eight statuettes – for best film, adapted screenplay, set design, original song (“I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?”), and for supporting actor (Ryan Gosling). and supporting actress (America Ferrera). In turn, Bradley Cooper’s “The Maestro” can count on a maximum of seven Oscars – for best film, leading actress (Carey Mulligan), leading actor (Cooper), original screenplay, make-up and hairstyles, sound and cinematography.
British-Polish-American co-production “Business Zone” directed by Jonathan Glazer was recognized in five categories – best film, director, adapted screenplay, international feature film and sound. The same number of nominations went to “Anatomy of a Fall” by Justine Triet. The film representing France was nominated for best film, director, leading female role (Sandra Huller), original screenplay and editing.
The best film – apart from “Anatomy of a Fall”, “Barbie”, “Bloody Moon”, “The Maestro”, “Oppenheimer”, “Poor Things” and “Stream Zone” – may turn out to be “American Fiction” by Cord Jefferson, “Winter Solstice” “Alexander Payne or “Past Lives” by Celine Song.
The group of nominees in the best leading actress category is completed by Annette Bening (“Nyad”). In addition to Blunt and Ferrera, the supporting actress award may go to Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), Jodie Foster (“Nyad”) or Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“Winter Solstice”). However, the best leading actor – apart from Cooper and Murphy – may be Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Paul Giamatti (“Winter Solstice”) or Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”), and the best supporting actor – Sterling K Brown (” American Fiction”).
The award winners will be announced on Sunday, March 10, during a gala held at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater. Jimmy Kimmel will host the celebration. The actor and comedian held this position three times in the past – in 2017, 2018 and 2023 (PAP)
