Let it be said at once. Red has been my party for a number of years. I have seen the backside of society. I believe in a fairer distribution of values in society, and a more responsible attitude towards our gradually diminishing resources.
Then the Moxnes case appeared, and both Rødt and Moxnes have so far handled the whole thing disappointingly and clumsily.
Having served in the police/prosecutor’s office for over 35 years, I see criminal law as completely unproblematic. Taking an item with you that you forget to pay for is not punishable. Such incidents have happened to many of us – including me. It is not a criminal offense to be distracted or stressed.
But, when you discover that you are in possession of an item that you know has not been paid for, and then choose to keep it, then you have done something punishable. The honest citizen would go back and sort things out.
My party leader panicked. He was afraid of his good name and reputation, and put this before morality and obedience to the law. Many would probably do the same, but they are not politicians for Rødt. I would like to have a party leader who, in pure distraction, brings sunglasses from a shop, but:
I don’t want a party leader who discovers the mistake and chooses to ignore it.
I don’t want a party leader having a panic attack over a minor mistake.
I do not want a party leader who puts his own reputation before morality and the law.
I don’t want a party leader who gets sick when he faces self-inflicted problems.
I don’t want a party leader who doesn’t handle the press.

I don’t feel sorry for Moxnes. He made his choices in the situation and not least afterwards. He made choices that a politician should not make.
Remember: Being a politician is not a profession. It is a position of trust where you must act as a proxy for those who have given their vote and their trust.
So what does my party do? No central shop stewards express a lack of confidence. It is of course difficult not to support a party leader, close friend, comrade, brother-in-law, whatever, who is down. But here the rest of the party leadership must not fall into the camera trap. Here they have to think about the party, their ordinary members, and the party’s reputation. Red is a special party!
Now it must be said that several sitting politicians have been caught without tickets on trains and trams, some have cheated on travel bills, some have cheated with residential addresses, some have messed up both here and there, some have insulted young people in the organization and some have even been to a brothel in Eastern Europe in the service of the party. But these were not from Rødt. Red a special lot.
Red doesn’t need Moxnes. He can easily be replaced. There are several central Rødt politicians who have done at least as good a job as Moxnes in the past year. They turn out to be from both Akershus, Rogaland, and not least from my hometown Bergen.
Red is a special party. And that is my party for now. So we’ll see in the fall…
