Opinions on the article Turris Omnia is great hardware, designing something better is a problem, says Michal Hrušecký

I see this as the initial collision of targeting. Concept geek is very explanatory. It is a group of people who are interested in improving, but do not yet have experience. In practice, this means that one expects to start virtualization, the other expects to route safely (and some magic will help him not make a mistake), the third wants to solve WiFi, the fourth wants to run a small server. Although we simplify it under one word, it is a disparate group.

When used, they find that it is not so simple and that many of their ideas collide with each other. At this point, the geek discovers that Turris is not moving him any further than any other device – so he finds a problem with any solution.

As I follow this, I would describe this phase as a time of disillusionment. CZ.NIC PR articles no longer work, they rather cause smiles.

If I were to speak more specifically:
1. Everyone is interested in security, but the paying customer cannot tell if the firewall on TP-Link works worse than on Turris. He has the cheap TP-Link at home and he also “never had a problem”.
2. No added value for corporate customers is added. They could help a lot, because price is not such a big obstacle for them. From the added values, I could list, for example, the functions á la SD-WAN.
3. Geeks are not given any “marketing” support to promote the equipment to end customers. The ideal situation is when a geek can convince his customer / acquaintance to buy it – this would make the toy available and he would not pay for it.

I see Shield as a step in the right marketing direction. Elsewhere on root.cz, technical aspects were discussed, as well as the fact that such a solution cannot be completely universal. However, I already see some vision in this product. MOX for geeks, Shield for consumers. Add two to three extra features (the firewall update argument within seconds of detecting the problem in Australia is a bit funny) and it can be an interesting product.

It would also be interesting to list use cases for the Czech environment. E.g. state which lines it is suitable for (VDSL, UPC 1 Gb, …) – no embellishments, simply measured power, tests.
