In recent days, everyone had an opinion about Countess Eloise, who as a participant in The Picture Perfect appeared in front of the camera in a bathing suit. Snel’s statements were met with outrage on social media. Because why can’t you decide for yourself whether you show up somewhere in a bathing suit? The hashtag #magditwelvanjeroensnel was soon created, with well-known and unknown Dutch people posting a photo of themselves in swimwear.
The royalty expert later qualified his statements. What exactly did he mean? “That sometimes the monarchy is getting a little ordinary.” Alida Dijk, editor-in-chief of the royalty magazine Monarchsunderstands where Snel comes from.
“It is a tension between the old generation and the young royals, and the breath of fresh air that the latter group brings to the royal house. But the fact that this criticism is now aimed at Eloise was a bit unfortunate,” says Dijk in conversation with NU .NL.
“It’s about a young woman, in the prime of her life. But she doesn’t do anything crazy. And thanks to Instagram, we already know her from a looser side.”

“I’m a fan of bathing suits and I’m a fan of Eloise”
Chances are we’ll see more young royals of this new, fresh side in the future. Dijk: “I think we have to get used to the fact that the young generation is coming. A group that has opportunities and resources to make themselves popular in a different way.”
According to Dijk, the royal family could use that popularity in this day and age. “Certainly among young people, there is less support for the royal house. So let those young princes, princesses, counts and countesses show how they live their lives. That can ensure that that popularity increases again.”
After Eloise’s performance in The Picture Perfect, where she posed in a bathing suit for her fellow candidate Rick Brandsteder, her parents were also asked for their opinion. They see no harm in their daughter’s participation. “I think she is doing very well and she looked beautiful,” said Princess Laurentien RTL Boulevard.
“I’m a huge fan of bathing suits and I’m a huge fan of Eloise. I really don’t understand what we’re talking about, but everyone has their opinion.” And Prince Constantijn also said that he likes his daughter to participate in the photography program.
‘The new generation has made the royal family more accessible’
Eloise has every opportunity to participate in such a program. She is not a member of the Royal House. These are only the king, his family and the second-degree relatives who are heirs of Willem-Alexander. These are Máxima, Amalia, Alexia, Ariane, Willem-Alexander’s brother Constantijn, his wife Laurentien and Princess Beatrix. “The new generation has completely different means of communication than, for example, Charles and Willem-Alexander,” says Monarchseditor-in-chief Dyke. “So their lives are seen by many more people. As a result, the royal family has become more accessible.” And according to Dijk, that is a positive development.
“It is good to show that someone like Eloise is in the middle of life. It is a student of almost 21, let her live her life and make her own choices.”
