Opinions of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank: Living Conditions and Authority Perspectives

Days before the Hamas attack on Israel, which began on October 7, the Arab Barometer research network conducted an opinion poll in Gaza and the West Bank about their living conditions and their opinion of their authority, especially the movement that rules the Strip.

The survey was conducted in partnership with the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, the American magazine Foreign Affairs, and with support from the US National Endowment for Democracy.

Foreign Affairs said that the survey provides a quick overview of the opinions of ordinary Palestinian citizens on the eve of the outbreak of the recent conflict, by conducting face-to-face interviews in the participants’ places of residence.

She explained that the interviews took place between September 28 and October 8, and included 790 people in the West Bank and 399 others in Gaza, knowing that the survey in the Strip ended on October 6, one day before the Hamas attack.

What results were reached?

The vast majority of Gazans suffer severe economic hardship and are frustrated by Hamas’ “ineffective governance.” 44 percent of participants do not trust Hamas at all, and 23 percent “do not trust a lot” in the movement, compared to 29 percent who expressed their confidence “a great deal” in their government. 72 percent said that there is a great deal (34 percent) or a moderate amount (38 percent) of corruption in government institutions. Most Gazans do not support Hamas’ ideology.

Foreign Affairs concluded by saying: “In general, the results of the survey indicate that Gazans have lost confidence in Hamas and desire political change.”

Hamas has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2006, knowing that its population is slightly over two million people.
