Opinion | Working time and digital

Time and its many facets have fascinated over the centuries. Henri Bergson had already demonstrated the stretching of this notion according to our feelings, our impatience or our regrets. More recently, Guillaume Poitrinal had shown in his book “La France sick de son temps” how much this notion, here centered on duration, played a fundamental role in competitiveness by comparing the construction times (including administrative authorization) between France and China.

The digital revolution in turn introduces a new distortion seen from the perspective of working time. Twenty years ago, hours of work were a good measure of the amount of work done. Indeed, the repetitive, shifted, interchangeable work was apprehended by the time spent and the duration. This is how the Labor Code sanctuarizes the famous 35 hours as the limit which, if crossed, will give rise to the right to additional remuneration.
