As summer approaches, maternity wards are on high alert. The summer period is often under high tension with reduced staff and overcrowded hospitals. But make no mistake, we are also facing a deeper phenomenon that has persisted and grown for many years: the lack of qualified personnel and the closure of establishments force many women to give birth in risky conditions.
In the Lot, there is only one maternity hospital for nearly 90,000 women. Expectant mothers have to drive an hour to give birth, leading to nightmarish situations. The region’s firefighters are regularly called for unexpected deliveries, at home, in the car or in the ambulance, for lack of being able to reach the maternity ward. This remoteness from maternity wards is revolting, especially since it is a reality for many territories. Worse still, it carries risks for future mothers and newborns because pregnancy monitoring is degraded.
