In the International Congress Center in Burgas, the scientific conference “Ophthalmology and interdisciplinary solutions” was held, organized by the Bulgarian Society of Ophthalmology and with the assistance of the management of the Municipality of Burgas.

The conference attracted over 850 ophthalmologists, doctors from various fields and medical specialists from Bulgaria and abroad, who shared their experience, knowledge and the latest achievements in the field of ophthalmology.

The event highlighted modern interdisciplinary approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, as well as new technological solutions to improve visual health.

One of the key topics of the conference was the increasing frequency of myopia – a disease that already affects about 15% of the population in Bulgaria.

According to experts, this rate continues to grow, especially among young people, which makes the need for early diagnosis and prevention even more important.

Within the framework of the Conference, current topics were discussed in connection with modern diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for a number of eye diseases. The emphasis was on interdisciplinary collaboration and integrated care.

In parallel with the main program of the scientific forum, a program for specialists and young specialists was held.

Another key topic was related to eye health and healthy ageing. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME) are among the leading eye diseases leading to vision loss and blindness, especially among people 50 years of age or older.

The experts emphasized the importance of regular preventive examinations and early detection of vision disorders, recommending the strengthening of national eye examination programs.

By 2050, half of the world’s population is expected to suffer from some form of visual impairment.

For this reason, the specialists discussed the challenges facing modern ophthalmology and the need to introduce national standards in the treatment of eye diseases.

Art.-cor. Prof. Dr. Hristina Nikolova Grupcheva, MD, President of the Bulgarian Society of Ophthalmology, noted that by the end of 2024 or at the latest in 2025, a National Treatment Standard will be introduced in Bulgaria of eye diseases.

According to her, this standard will be fundamental for the improvement of diagnostics and therapies in the field of ophthalmology, contributing to the more effective treatment of a number of vision problems.

Also, she shared: “In recent years, we have observed a significant development of ophthalmology in Bulgaria. Our goal is not only to offer the best technologies to patients, but also to create conditions for better treatment by introducing national standards. We are convinced that collaboration between specialists from different medical fields is the key to success in the treatment of complex ophthalmic cases.”

The conference in Burgas provided an opportunity for the participants – specialists from the field of ophthalmology and other medical fields, scientists and young doctors, not only to get acquainted with the latest technologies and methods in ophthalmology, but also to discuss future trends in visual health and its social meaning.
