Dubai | Police have revealed details of an operation that foiled an international criminal gang’s attempt to smuggle millions of banned Captagon pills into the UAE using manufacturing skills. Police seized 86 million drug pills weighing 13.76 tonnes hidden in 651 doors and 432 decorative panels through Operation Storm.
In a documentary released yesterday, anti-narcotics officials shared the inside story of the world’s biggest captain hunt. The incident started after a tip-off about five containers containing drugs being transported by a cargo ship. The police followed the gang’s movements without food or sleep.
After the ship anchored at a port in Dubai, police action was launched. Preliminary examination found nothing. Then the furniture items were X-ray scanned. Each weighed up to 200 kilograms. Unidentified objects were found in it. A police dog also detected the presence of drugs.
The officers found the drugs by carefully splitting the doors and furniture panels and caught the accused red-handed.
There have also been attempts to smuggle Captagon pills by hiding them in various goods. Dubai Customs recently seized 956 bags of pills cleverly hidden in food items.
