The wave of serious crimes in recent days has made the Surinamese Ministry of Justice and Police decide to further tighten up the ‘Safe Suriname’ operation. Violent armed robbery on citizens in homes, businesses and on the public road regularly take place.

Authorities have also noticed a range of criminal activity, which is not uncommon at this time of year. It has been found that every year around this time, society becomes the victim of serious robberies in which a lot of violence is used. There are also arguments and differences of opinion that lead to shootings and stabbings.

There was a case at Te Redi Doti on Wednesday, December 29, in which heavily armed criminals dressed in camouflage suits robbed a number of people. Judith Dragtenstein, Head of Serious Crime at the Ministry of Justice and Police, acknowledges the serious crime situation as it currently exists.

She calls on the community to help track down the perpetrators of these brutal robberies, which left two people dead. The police chief also asks that people do not move to the area, and that at the same time be careful at all times. Dragtenstein points out that the police cannot be everywhere. She assures the community that with the intensification of the operation, the police have also increased their visibility in all areas, including in the hinterland.

The case where hand bones were found in the yard of journalist Jason Pinas, has the full attention of the authorities. The police officer says the matter is under investigation. The community asks to be alert. The police will be visible everywhere, even after 9 p.m., when the lockdown time starts.
