“Rusalka” by Antonín Dvořák from the MET in New York
–
It is an enchanting fairy tale and at the same time a deadly sad story: The water mermaid Rusalka and the prince fall in love and want to get married, but ultimately two such different beings cannot come together. With the music of Antonín Dvořák, one is only too happy to lose oneself in this fairytale world.

It’s the 90th season of Saturday matinees, broadcast around the world from the MET in New York. And it’s a very special season, because as is well known, the New York Opera House had to cancel the entire 2020/21 season due to the pandemic. How nice that at least the Saturday broadcasts can continue, for which the MET has specially put together a season with special recordings from its archive.
Today we go back to 2014, once again Otto Schenk’s 1993 production is being taken from the pool. It is very traditional in that it brings the fairy tale to the stage unchanged – but it works so well that the audience is almost drawn into the fairy tale world. And the music does the rest: with the soprano Renée Fleming and the tenor Piotr Beczała you have a dreamlike pair of singers, with whom all reality is distant.
Broadcast: hr2-kultur, “Opernbühne”, May 15, 2021, 8:04 pm.
