Opera singers perform protest song on the eve of closure: ‘My homeland, so beautiful and lost’

Opera Ballet Vlaanderen (OBV) performed its provisional last performance of ‘La bohème’ on Thursday evening before it closes its doors due to the corona measures. To express their displeasure, at the end of the performance the opera singers performed the Slave Choir of Verdi, a choir about a people who dream of a homeland. Jan Vandenhouwe, artistic director of OBV: ‘In today’s light, this song has symbolic value. A homeland in which culture always comes last is indeed beautiful and lost.’
