Filming for director Maris Martinson’s historical feature film will begin soon “A land that sings“- about the First General Latvian Singing Festival. Its premiere is planned for 2023, when the 150th anniversary of the unique tradition will be celebrated. The opera singer has agreed to play one of the main roles. In the film “Land that Sings”, the opera artist will play Zelma, the eldest sister of a wealthy Vidzeme owner, who plays an important role in the historical plot of the film – during the first Latvian Singing Festival. Along with the national awakening started by the young Latvians, the struggle of Latvian women for equality also began. Zelma and her goddaughter Anna, as the central characters of the film, embody two generations – the 19th century. the vision of the world of middle and late Latvian women, their aspiration for culture, for full participation in the spiritual and economic life of the future Latvian nation.
Zelma, played by Marina Rebeka, after graduating from the Pärnu Girls’ Gymnasium in Vidzeme Province and acquiring the rights of a home teacher, served first as a governor, but later also as a farm manager in a rich manor near St. Petersburg. The sudden death of her brother forced her to return to Vidzeme and take care of both the family farm and her niece Anna. Zelma, who has no children, raises Anna as her daughter. His goddaughter is introduced not only to rural but also to urban life. In addition to fieldwork and homework, she teaches how to dress fashionably, how to stand for herself, makes expressive reading of books to develop speech talents, and encourages singing, despite the fact that at the 1873 Singing Festival in Riga there are only a few mixed choirs. with very few women.
Marina Rebecca admits that she will have a kind of baptism of fire in the film “Earth that sings”: “It is interesting for myself how to deal with everything, because it is not easy to relax and be natural in front of the camera. It will be a special challenge – to play this image, It will be necessary to learn to get used to the process of filming, because everything happens differently here than in an opera, where the views of the show follow each other.During the filming, the sequence of events is mixed, so you have to be able to feel the situation each time. to be able to challenge myself as an actress.
