The visitors to the Stuttgart State Opera were probably looking forward to an exciting evening at the opera. For some of them, it ended differently than expected. During the first two performances of Florentina Holzinger’s work “Sancta”, the visitor service looked after a total of 18 people, some of whom complained of nausea, said State Opera spokesman Sebastian Ebling. In three cases a doctor had to be called in.
Opera “Sancta” only for visitors aged 18 and over
Holzinger is known in the theater scene for her work in which she radically and freely presents female bodies and does not shy away from violence. Her latest work is therefore only permitted for visitors aged 18 and over and has been provided with several warnings. There are “explicit sexual acts as well as depictions and descriptions of (sexual) violence. Real blood as well as fake blood, piercing procedures and the infliction of a wound can also be seen,” said the State Opera.
In short, it’s about a nun who discovers her sexuality and her desires. Holzinger turns it into an almost three-hour feminist performance that breaks numerous boundaries. There will be five more performances at the Stuttgart State Opera until November 3, 2024. Spokesman Sebastian Ebling advises interested visitors to read the trigger instructions carefully beforehand “so that you know what to expect.”
