Leipzig / Berlin (MH) – German-speaking opera houses are seeing signs of a turnaround in audience response. Visitors would return after the pandemic, the president of the German-speaking Opera Conference, Susanne Moser, said Saturday after a meeting of DOK representatives at the Leipzig Opera. “Your desire for the analog and for emotional experiences makes the opera a place of the future,” she explained.
The focus of this year’s autumn conference were, among other things, the consequences of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, as well as related factors such as the energy crisis and rising costs. “Deep human experiences will always be of existential importance to society – which is why the stages must remain open, even in times of dwindling resources,” said Moser, who is co-artistic director and managing director of Komische Oper Berlin.
The opera conference connects the 13 largest houses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as well as three associated theaters in London, Milan and Paris. The artistic directors, the managing directors and the opera directors meet twice a year.
